Colorado Springs And Sports - A Perfect Marriage

Tucked up against the front range of the Rocky Mountains in the shadow of 14,000-foot Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs has won a reputation in the last three decades as one of the nation’s most attractive places to live. It is also one of America’s top destinations for sports, with an international reputation.

Colorado Springs is the home of the United States Olympic Committee since 1978, U.S. Paralympics, the USOC’s flagship Olympic Training Center, and 22 of the USOC’s National Governing Bodies of Olympic and Pan Am Games sports. All told, the city is home to almost 50 domestic and international sports organizations, such as the Mountain West Conference, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, U.S. Association of Blind Athletes, Native American Sports Council, the Pacific Coast Baseball League, and the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Also in the city are the headquarters of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, Wheelchair Sports USA, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, U.S. Hang Gliding Association, National Strength And Conditioning Association, U.S. Golf Association Foundation, and the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association.

Colorado Springs is known as the “City Where Olympic and Paralympic Dreams begin.”

More than 350,000 athletes have trained in the city for a shot at berths on Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American Games and various U.S. International Teams since the Olympic Training Center opened in 1977 with Olympic legend Bob Mathias as its first director.

The city of some 389,000 and metro population of almost 600,000 has developed a tradition as a great sports center, and it gets bigger every year. In 2006, the city became the USOC’s seventh Community Olympic Partner.

The city has hosted hundreds of USOC and National Governing Body events, including three USOC National Sports Festivals (1978, 1979, 1983), Olympic and Pan Am Games Trials, and the World Cycling Championships.

The Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, created in 1978 as the USOC relocated to the city from New York, supports all of the city’s sports organizations and promotes their events on a year ‘round basis. The Sports Corp stages the Rocky Mountain State Games, the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame, ice hockey, football and baseball sports luncheons, and partners with organizations to bring events to the city and support them such as the USA Boxing National Championships and NCAA Ice Hockey Regional Championships. It also supports and partners with the fabled Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The Sports Corp bid for and won the 2005, 2007 and 2009 State Games of America, which brought some 33,000 athletes to the city during the three editions of the national event.

Upcoming events to watch for include the 2010 U.S. Olympic Assembly, 2011 Rocky Mountain State Games, 2010 Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies and Banquet, the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship at The Broadmoor,  the 89th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2011, and the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships.

Sports fans also enjoy the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball team of the Pacific Coast League, the annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the Pikes Peak Or Bust Rodeo, Air Force Academy football  basketball, and Ice Hockey, the powerful Colorado College Tigers’ ice hockey team of the WCHA - the nation’s premier NCAA Division I conference, NCAA Division II sports at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, NCAA Division I women’s soccer at Colorado College, and top high school sports.
